Atletico Madrid Transfer News
Axel Witsel has joined Atletico Madrid after leaving Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer.
After spending four years in Dortmund, Witsel’s contract with BVB expired at the end of June. He has now joined Atletico for one season.
After Boubacar Kamara, 22, signed with Aston Villa, Atletico is alleged to have switched their attention to Witsel.
Diego Simeone needed to add midfield reinforcements as a result of Hector Herrera’s transfer to Houston Dynamo.
In addition, Witsel, 33, who represented Belgium internationally at Dortmund until his departure, brings experience and talent to the team.
Although it was long anticipated that Witsel would leave this year, he made 29 Bundesliga games last season as Dortmund finished second to Bayern Munich.
Simeone will be hoping that Witsel injects some much-needed steel into Atletico’s midfield, which was frequently ineffective last season as their title defense never really got underway.
Witsel will play in Spain for the sixth time in his illustrious career after stints in his native Belgium, Portugal, Russia, China, and Germany.
