“The Royal Storm” Isaac Dogboe won a hard-fought WBC featherweight title eliminator over hard-hitting and relentless two-time world title challenger Joet Gonzalez, who had previously lost to Shakur Stevenson and Emmanuel Navarette.
Dogboe started off beautifully, putting the first three rounds in the bank, before Gonzalez rebounded in the middle rounds, launching an unrelenting onslaught on the Anyako native.
Gonzalez marched forward, forcing Dogboe to fight on the back foot and hitting head and body blows frequently, stunning him in Round Four.
Isaac remained undeterred, sending out his own measure of retribution.
Trainer Barry Hunter’s pep talk before the last round performed wonders on Dogboe, who was inspired to win the round and finish strong.
Two judges scored the fight 96-94 for Dogboe, while one judge scored it 96-94 for Gonzalez.
The victory suggests that Dogboe is getting closer to a World Title and could face WBC Featherweight Champion Rey Vargas next.
The former world champion from Ghana displayed improved skills on the Top Rank bill in Minnesota after switching to Barry Hunter’s Head Bangers stable for his last three battles.
But he doesn’t seem to have the same fierce force he did when he weighed 122 pounds.
However, as things stand, Dogboe is on the verge of earning another championship berth.
